Precast
Concrete Software Consortium (PCSC)
 |
The PCSC is an association of twenty-three major precast concrete producers from Canada, the United States and Mexico. The consortium comprises a significant proportion of the precast concrete production capabilities in North America.
The industry uses a wide variety of software for all aspects of the business. Typically, precast concrete manufacturers use a mixture of “off the shelf” software packages combined with varying degrees of customization to perform various functions. Typical functions include estimating, design, manufacturing, inventory control, shipping, accounting functions, etc. Traditionally, most of the software to perform and track these functions has been disjointed, i.e. there is little or no communication between the functions.
|
The PCSC member companies have identified the need for an industry-wide integrated software platform for the design, analysis, detail engineering and shop layout for a precast concrete building assembly and all of an assembly’s component pieces. It is expected that the system will be based on networked workstations, and will support direct two-directional data exchange with many other project and enterprise IT systems. The envisaged system is detailed in a Software Specification, developed by the members of the consortium and the Georgia Tech technical support team, and published as part of a Request for Proposal issued to invited software development companies.
The consortium is currently undertaking the initial phase of what is expected to be a multi-stage development project. The work includes:
- Developing a technical specification for commercial computer applications addressing the precast concrete industry
- Coordinating with software companies that respond to the specification
The main focus of the next stage of the work will be the development of a Product Model integrating precast concrete applications with both external AEC applications and enterprise management applications.
