Director Charles Eastman
" The PhD Program is highly demanding, exciting—" Charles Eastman, Director

Message from the Director

Welcome to the Georgia Tech PhD program in the College of Architecture website. Georgia Tech has a large and active PhD Program. Our graduates have taken a variety positions, some to teach in several of the best U.S. and foreign universities, others to work in senior positions in government, others as consultants and some to professional practice.

The program includes several fields of study: 1) City and Regional Planning; 2) Architecture, Culture and Behavior; 3) Architectural Morphology; 4) Architecture History, Theory and Criticism; 5) Building Technology; 6) Design Computing; 7) Building Construction and 8) Design Cognition.

The PhD Program typically receives from three to six or more applications for each person admitted. When we review applications we are looking for both evidence of exceptional ability on the part of the applicant and good fit with the Program’s fields of study and offerings. Background in your area of specialization and good indication of the ability to write in English are important prerequisites. There are many highly qualified applicants, who go on to successful careers, who are not suited for Georgia Tech because we lack faculty and research to support their interests. I would strongly urge you to get as much information as you can about the program and about the faculty you might work with! We have a great deal of information on our Web site, and most faculties have publications that are widely accessible on the Web.

The Georgia Tech College of Architecture PhD Program is highly demanding, exciting - and sometimes frustrating and difficult - but it is ultimately satisfying for the motivated and capable students for whom it is designed. The PhD Program has a long and distinguished history that has produced many outstanding graduates. I invite you to apply and to join us. As you can probably tell, we are enthusiastic about the program. We attempt to create an intellectual community that is both supportive and challenging for students. We look forward to receiving your application.
